Indians are the same everywhere.
Being half-Yugoslav and fully US-raised didn't make the slightest difference to Sunita Williams, who has carried a packet of samosas on the Discovery Mission.
A pedestrian snack who has orbited the whole earth has reached new heights, the Milky Way. Now samosa can proudly say “humse hai jamana”
“Jab tak rahega samose mein aloo, tab tak rahega Bihar mein Laloo”. Now, Laloo can be found in the campuses of the revered colleges. (The first to plant the inverted flag of empire on British soil, it has Netted a mind-Googling 548,000 entries.)
But our samosas still has the aloo. Laloo may have created a new brand image for himself but, the golden fried delicacy is still there with its brand image..
It generally consists of a fried triangular-/pyramid-shaped pastry shell with a savory potato, onion and pea stuffing, but other stuffings like minced meat and fish are often used. The size and shape of a samosa, as well as the consistency of the pastry used, can vary considerably. It is spicy and is often eaten with chutney, such as mint, coriander or tamarind.
It is often savored with tea or coffee. It can also be prepared as a sweet form, rather than as a savory one.
In the city of Hyderabad, India, a smaller version of the samosa with a thicker pastry crust and mince filled center is called a Luqmi.
Samosas are often served in chaat, along with the traditional accompaniments of yogurt, chutney, chopped onions and coriander, and chaat masala.
Samosas have become popular in the United Kingdom and East Africa, Persian Gulf countries as well. They are often called "Samboosa" or sambusac by the Arabs.
Frozen samosas are increasingly available in grocery stores in the United States.
Baked samosas are a healthier alternative to the traditional fried ones. (source: Wikipedia)
A snack which has no boundaries.
It is savoured by one and each with all galore. Not a single meetings, get togethers, etc. is complete without it. No religion boundaries, no cultural diffeences in savouring this pale-gold, dimpled temptress.
Singhara----bengali name for samosa.
The winter version is the phoolkopi or cauliflowerets which add their seasonal kick to the all-weather aloo is savoured with such raptures that you might think that “amarder dada” (Sourav Ganguly)’s century is a mere thing.
Surprise! Surprise! The pedestrian snack is recommended with a Terra Blanca 2001 syrah' wine. Now at Savoy you may get a samosa. How much will it cost is a different story altogether.
So keep sinking your teeth in hot and spicy samosa or phoolkopi ir singhara.
